Dussehra 2024: Mythological Story of Celebrating Dussehra

According to mythology, when a demon named Mahishasur received a boon from Lord Brahma, then the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha) created Goddess Durga with their power.

The war between Goddess Durga and Mahishasur continued for 9 consecutive days and on the tenth day, Maa Durga killed Mahishasur and won over him.

On this day in Treta Yuga, Lord Rama killed Ravana and won over him.

This date is a symbol of the victory of Dharma over Adharma and truth over untruth. According to Ramayana, when Ravana kidnapped Sita, Lord Rama went to Lanka and fought with Ravana and killed him, which we consider a symbol of good over evil. Therefore, 9 days after Navratri, on Dussehra i.e. Vijayadashami, we burn the effigy of Ravana and celebrate Dussehra. Read more about Navratri Here.
